District 6 candidate Antonio Sanchez

The Coalition for School Reform will support Monica Garcia, Kate Anderson and Antonio Sanchez in their respective bids for LAUSD school board, according to paperwork filed with the Los Angeles Ethics Commission yesterday (you can see the form here).

The endorsements of Garcia and Anderson were expected. There was something of a question mark over what the Coalition would do in the East Valley’s District 6, where the choice was between charter school executive Iris Zuniga and Sanchez, who was also endorsed by the LA County Federation of Labor, SEIU and UTLA.

With this development, District 6 may be spared a big-money campaign battle like those that have come to characterize recent school board races. However, the battles over Districts 2 and 4 (currently held by Board members Garcia and Zimmer) could more than make up the difference. In the 2011 Luis Sanchez / Bennett Kayser race, the teachers union, SEIU and the Coalition for School Reform spent around $3 million.

According to paperwork, the Coalition has just under $50,000 cash on hand, although fundraising is expected to begin in earnest very soon. Ace Smith and Sean Clegg of SCN Strategies, who managed the successful Yes on Prop 30 campaign, have been hired as campaign consultants.
