The application period for LA Unified magnet programs, permits with transportation, and the dual language/bilingual programs will close tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 9.

If you are submitting a paper application to enroll your child in one of these choice programs, the envelope you’re mailing to the district should have a postmark with a date of Nov. 9 at the latest. The applications online will close at midnight.

Through the district’s new unified enrollment platform, parents can enroll students in their neighborhood school or — until tomorrow — apply to schools of choice that offer specialized programs within the district, but not charter schools.

MAGNETS

One of the three applications being accepted until tomorrow is for the 260 magnet programs located throughout the district. The magnet academic programs are focused on specific subject areas. The majority of programs are geared toward STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math).

These programs are considered “the jewels of the district.” Data indicate that LA Unified magnet schools/centers outperform other district schools and charter schools overall on state standardized tests.

More information on these programs can be found here, including a map by region that shows the magnet programs available by location.

BILINGUAL PROGRAMS

Applications to any of the 101 dual language and bilingual programs available district-wide will also close tomorrow. These programs are offered in Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, French, Armenian, and Arabic.

General guidelines to apply can be found here. You can also find the programs by language by clicking here.

PERMITS WITH TRANSPORTATION

Permits with transportation (PWT) is a program that provides transportation for students voluntarily attending schools other than their neighborhood schools. The district will also stop accepting applications for this program tomorrow.

Eligibility to apply for the PWT program is determined based on the nearest elementary school from where you live. You can find out here if the school is eligible for the program.

For information about existing routes, contact the transportation branch at 1-800-LA-BUSES or (213)-580-2950 or verify here if your family lives in an approved area.

Applying for any of the three choices can be done at the district’s unified enrollment system’s e-choice portal, apply.lausd.net until tomorrow at midnight. Paper applications should be mailed to: Student Integration Services 333 S. Beaudry Ave., 25th Floor Los Angeles, CA 90017.
