LAUSD board drawing closer to picking new superintendent

superintendent searchAs the year winds down, the the seven elected LAUSD school board members have pushed almost everything off their calendars except for picking the next district superintendent.

The selection process continued for eight hours yesterday, ending at 5:30 pm with plans to resume the deliberations at 8:30 am tomorrow.

While the board is winnowing its choices, a final selection from among a handful of finalists is not expected tomorrow, likely pushing any announcement into early January. The district’s winter break commences next week. Nothing is certain, however; in fact, an announcement could still come at any time.

Other than the seven school board members, the only people who know the full list of candidates that the board is considering include search firm president Hank Gmitro, the district’s attorney David Holmquist and board executive officer Jefferson Crain, who have attended all the discussions.

School board president Steve Zimmer has asked that the names of the candidates be kept confidential to ensure that the best people remain in contention as the process plays out.
