The LA Unified board today ended a month-long search by naming Michelle King, a 30-year veteran of the district, as its new superintendent. King, 54, succeeds Ramon Cortines, whom she served as his chief deputy until he stepped down last month and becomes the first African American woman to lead the district and the first woman in nearly 90 years.
