Responding to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Tuesday night challenge, Mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti is now calling for a May debate with opponent Wendy Greuel that would be focused solely on education.

“We agree that education has to be seriously debated in this campaign,” said Garcetti spokesman Jeff Millman in an email. “That’s why today we are calling on Controller Wendy Greuel to join us in a debate focused on education issues and the role of education in the mayor’s office.”

The five leading candidates in the Primary took part in an education forum, held at the United Way education summit in February. A handful of debates are already planned between now and the May 21 runoff election.

No word from the Greuel camp on whether or not their candidate will accept Garcetti’s challenge.
