Tomorrow, December 5,  is the deadline for LAUSD Board candidates to submit nominating petitions with at least 500 signatures to the City Clerk’s office in order to qualify for the March 2013 elections.

There are 22 candidates who have declared their intent to run for a seat on the board.

But as of this morning, only eight candidates have filed, and only six of those have submitted enough signatures and have qualified to run for the three contested seats.

In District 2 (central and east LA), current School Board President Monica Garcia and Robert Skeels have qualified.

In District 4 (Hollywood to the Palisades), current Board Member Steve Zimmer and Kate Anderson have qualified.

In District 6 (eastern San Fernando Valley), Antonio Sanchez and Ernie Cardenas have qualified to run for departing Board Member Nury Martinez’s open seat.

Signatures are still being counted for Eleanor Garcia, and Maria Cano is trying to gather more signatures after her first petition missed the count.
