Commentary: 3 Races Instead of 2
One of the most interesting things about Hillel Aron’s new LA Weekly profile about the race for District 4 (Can Kate Anderson Fix LAUSD?) is that Anderson was recruited to run against incumbent Board member Steve Zimmer. Defeating Zimmer may not be particularly difficult if he’s left hanging in the wind by UTLA, who isn’t particularly enamored with him, either....

Campaign ’13: Candidates To Watch
The final list of declared candidates for LAUSD school board is in, and the campaigns for Districts 2, 4, and 6 — three spots currently held by those with ties to Superintendent Deasy and his “reform” agenda — will likely eclipse 2011’s races in terms of spending and nastiness. But who are the key challengers...

Hollywood Coming Out for Garcia
A slightly deeper look into last week’s campaign fundraising filings for Board President Monica Garcia reveals not more only the charter school support that we’ve reported previously but also at least two members of the Hollywood elite: David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg, each of whom gave the $1,000 maximum. Over all, Garcia brought in just over $75,000 during the...

Possible Board Candidates: District 2
District 2 covers most of East Los Angeles and is currently represented by Monica Garcia, president of the school board and perhaps the staunchest foe of United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA). There are already a number of declared candidates in District 2, so the question isn’t so much who will run as who else...

Zimmer Alienating Both Sides
Just about everyone who watches LAUSD is scratching their heads wondering just what board member Steve Zimmer is doing — lately more than ever. He’s introduced two incredibly polarizing motions recently– one to reject the use of Academic Growth Over Time in teacher evaluations, and one to provide greater oversight for charter schools and, more...

Update: Folsom Enters Race Against Garcia
Parent activist Scott Folsom (4 LA Kids) suggests that there could be a big change in the makeup of the LAUSD board after the Spring elections — and is throwing his own name into the ring as a candidate (again). “History tells us school boards prefer to appoint their own superintendent when their membership changes,” writes the Deasy...
